Frequently Asked Questions

What is LASIK?
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure that can reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses. The procedure permanently changes the shape of the cornea, which is the delicate clear covering on the front of the eye. LASIK eye surgery is performed most often on people who have nearsightedness (myopia). LASIK is an outpatient surgical procedure that normally takes 10 to 15 minutes for each eye.

Who should not use LASIK?
You should probably not undergo LASIK if it will jeopardize your career, if cost is an issue, if you have required a change in your contact lens or glass prescription in the past year (have refractive instability), if you have a disease or are on medications that may affect wound healing, if you actively participate in contact sports in which blows to the face and eyes are a normal occurrence, or if you are not an adult (under the age of 18). In addition, as with any surgical procedure, although extremely unlikely, there are risks involved, and you should have a thorough understanding of such risks.

Is the laser eye surgery permanent?
Yes, the surgery permanently alters the shape and focus of your cornea.

What precautions should I take before undergoing LASIK eye surgery?
Your healthcare professional should screen for the following conditions before you undergo LASIK eye surgery: blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids with crusting of the eyelashes), large pupils, thin corneas, previous refractive surgery, and dry eyes.

Are there limits to how much refractive error can be corrected?
Yes, there are. The limits for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism depend on many factors, especially the thickness of your cornea. This can only be determined at your consultation.

What should I tell my healthcare professional before undergoing LASIK eye surgery?
Before undergoing LASIK eye surgery, tell your healthcare professional if you have a history of any of the following conditions: herpes simplex or herpes zoster (shingles) involving the eye area; glaucoma, suspected glaucoma, or ocular hypertension; eye diseases, such as uveits/iritis (inflammation of the eye); eye injuries or previous eye injuries; or keratoconus.

How do I know if I am suitable for LASIK?
To determine your suitability for LASIK you will need to come in for an initial consultation. At this consultation you will undergo the series of examinations and then we will discuss the procedure and what results you can expect. If you would like to check your suitability or if you have other questions please contact us on +371 6217317, cell +371 20016968

Why do contact lenses need to be left out before the surgery?
: Contact lenses may alter the natural curvature of the cornea. To have accurate results we need to know what the natural curvature of the cornea is, thus it is essential that lenses are left out prior to consultation and surgery.

How long does the surgery take?
The surgery itself takes around 15 minutes (10-13 minutes positioning and preparations for the procedure, and 2 minutes laser itself) although but you will be at the Center for about 90 minutes.

How much time will I need off work?
Most patients are able to return to work within 24-48 hours. You will need to return for a follow-up examination on the day after and it is best to plan to have that day off.>

When can I drive after LASIK?
In most cases you will be able to drive the day after LASIK. However, it does take some time to adjust to the change and you should use common sense and only drive when you feel confident with your new vision.
